Art in whatever form it takes is a personal endeavour that is put on public display. However, it's difficult for emerging artists to break into the rarified art world.

OPENING DOORS: David Knott, owner of the recently opened art gallery, 151, on Aberdeen Street, poses in a hallway of the gallery recently.

David Knott is trying to bring down the barriers between artists and consumers. He has opened a new art gallery, called 151, that will focus on unknown and little known artists.

"There are great galleries in Fredericton, but their prices often make it impossible for the general public to purchase original art. And, for the most part, they only represent established artists," said Knott. "I will be supporting local artists and, as time goes by, I plan to widen my search area.

"I want to find all those closet artists throughout the Maritimes. I'll be looking for top quality original work that will last a lifetime."

Knott has located his gallery in a restored home on Aberdeen Street. There are seven rooms where individuals can display their work.

"I finished the last of the renovations a half hour before the official opening on July 4. I have five artists now," he said. "I'm charging for the use of the room for a month and a small commission.

"I built this business for others. I'm hoping to feature different artists every month."

At this time, Knott only has paintings and photography hanging in his gallery. However, he would like to feature other types of art, including sculptures, ceramics and metalwork. He will be renting space for receptions, poetry readings and other events.

"I want to show the diversity of work being produced here as well as the diversity of the artist's talent," Knott said. "I don't want people to be intimidated when they visit the gallery. There will be no pressure to buy - just a comfortable experience where both the artists and the public are served."
